This was part of a much larger setting than the two-minute video suggests. Dr. Bongsup Cho was involved in a grant-funded program at URI that used 3D animation to make difficult biomedical and pharmaceutical concepts easier for students to see and understand. I was one of the undergraduates doing that work.
Why I made this
A developer or technical artist exploring Maya dynamics can understand the individual features and still struggle to assemble them into a convincing effect.
The most helpful answer for this problem was a working example: show the scene, show the small amount of scripting, and let the viewer see the behavior immediately.
What I did
I compressed the lesson into a speed tutorial and focused on the pieces required to produce the blood-flow motion. The MEL scripts and their visible effect stay close together, so the viewer can connect cause and result.
The question was small enough for a two-minute answer. Once the motion was working on screen, the viewer had something they could test and extend without sitting through a general Maya course.
A note on the archive
I had remembered this as the EnVision Lab, but URI’s records point to a different and more specific history. In 2008 the College of Pharmacy was still in Fogarty Hall, which housed its 3-D visualization auditorium. The current program history calls it the 3D Animation Program and says it began in 2003 with support from the Champlin Foundations.
URI credits Professor Bongsup Cho, Professor Marian Goldsmith, and Roy Bergstrom as collaborators, with student technical support coming through the Student Technology Assistant program. The same general body of work also led to my attending the 2007 Gordon Research Conference on Visualization in Science and Education at Bryant University while I was still an undergraduate. That was my first Gordon Research Conference and an unusually early look at an international community built around explaining science visually.
This video uses Autodesk Maya and MEL techniques from 2008. The interface and modern simulation options have changed substantially, so treat it as a historical demonstration rather than current instruction.
